2023, A year of digital wandering.
Ive been involved in tech related business and work since 2005. It therefore makes sense that during 2023, the year I will be wandering the UK, sharing resources and reaching out to women across the country, that I be prepared.
I am grateful that I live in a place where mobile signal is sketchy and interconnection appears to be luck of the draw. This has helped enormously in establishing which tech works best and which providers are best switched on for those in far flung places.
Tech however needs not only to keep the food on the table, it also needs to keep us safe. More about this to follow …..
Apple or Microsoft?
The comparison between Apple and Microsoft seems to be commonplace.
Personally I think it has less to do with which software solution is better and more to do with budget. However on first glance, budget is not all it is cracked up to be.
I can buy a reasonably priced entry level brand new Windows laptop for around £600. A similar Apple product will cost nearly twice that. SO how do does Apple manage to continue to grow its market?
1. Brand 2. Reliability
I confess that I became an Apple convert several years ago and some of the reasons may surprise you. The fact that my Macbook doesnt slow down at the same rate as a Windows based laptop, less risk of viruses and of course Apple is less woke than Microsoft.
While you can sign up to one drive and back up to Google Drive once you have purchased a Windows based system, what I really love about Apple is that they make things so much easier. subscribe to icloud additional storage and save everything in the cloud including Apps in a few simple clicks.
Software is becoming more accessible for Mac
The days when you could not access software applicationson both platforms are pretty much gone. If a company is worth its salt, their application is available for both operating systems.
Everything works together
I have an iPhone, an iMac, a Macbook , iPad and an Apple watch, as well as Apple tags. It all works together and syncs in concert. When I upgrade a product, the transfer of data from one item to the next, just works. I dont need to worry about product comnpatibility.
Apple makes money work
Aside from Apple Pay which is pretty much equalled by Google Pay and others, their Wallet works a dream and Apple considers financial accessibility a priority. This is why Apple is moving towards fintech and soon youll be able to set up installment payments using Apple technology.
Whats not to love.
Apple however is still woke enough that it states online that gender is not binary. The difference is that they currently respect my right to disagree as well.
What about Internet
There are countries such as Korea and China where the idea that internet access must be considered a human right thrives.
That may be all good and well, but if youre on. alow income and also either a digital nomad or homeless, how do you achieve this access.
There are two obvious ways. 1. Use somebody elses or 2. Get your own.
If youre really stuck, there is always a pub, coffeeshop or a retail outlet that offers its customers free WiFi access. But what about in the dark of the night, when you want to really work on something.
I have two solutions. Firstly I have a mobile hotspot on my phone – but beware some providers, especially those with unlimited packages will limit how much data can pass through your WiFi Hotspot in any given month.
Solution number two is the Mobile broadband solution, either using the smaller MiFi Dongle or a larger 4G/5G Mobile router. I use the Router from Three with unlimited Data. ANd its worth every penny.
Getting your own Mobile broadband
Never has broadband been so accessible to everyone. I should know, I live in the arse end of nowhere and can still get on the internet. What makes signing up with Three so attractive is that you do not have to take up a contract.
You can shoose a rolling contract or PAYG. This means that those months that you are stuck for cash, you simply dont get hot with non payment fees.
It is thanks to Three and their mobile broadband that I have been successful in rebuilding my life after a serious work and relationship breakdown.
